Ilford Station Improvement Programme

Challenges: Noise & Dust Control • Live Operational Railway

THE WORK

The scope of work for the MTR SIP Mop Up Works at Ilford Station involved a comprehensive refurbishment of the old section of the station to align with the new station design and colour scheme. The specific tasks included preparing and removing rust areas, painting structural steel, parapet panels, and framing on the link bridge and stairwell sections. It was crucial to match the new MTR colour scheme while ensuring the station remained fully operational throughout the works. The following activities were completed:

ACTIVITIES

Preparing all paint areas:
This involved surface preparation, including cleaning, sanding, and ensuring a smooth surface for painting.

Rust removal and protection:
Any areas affected by rust were treated by removing the rust and applying suitable protective coatings to prevent further corrosion.

Painting
The identified structural steel, parapet panels, and framing were painted to match the new MTR colour scheme, enhancing the overall aesthetics of the station.

Application of sealant:
Sealant was applied to ensure proper sealing and protection against moisture or other external elements.

CHALLENGES

To address the challenges faced during the project, the following measures were implemented:

Noise and dust management
Given that noise and dust can be disruptive and harmful, sound barriers and dust extractors were utilised with all sanding tools. These measures helped minimise noise levels and airborne dust particles, creating a safer and more comfortable working environment.

Impact on the live operational railway:
To avoid disrupting train services, the works were carefully scheduled during pre-planned night shifts and weekends when possession of the line was arranged. By working during these specific periods, the team could minimise the impact on the live operational railway and carry out the necessary tasks without affecting regular train operations.
By employing these strategies, the refurbishment works were executed efficiently while maintaining a high level of safety and minimising disruptions to the station’s operations.
