THE WORK
Our scope on this project was to install a new Anti-Fatality midplatform fence at Ealing Broadway Station, specifically on Platform 2-3. The purpose of the fence is to enhance safety and prevent accidents. The installation process includes several components:
ACTIVITIES
Bespoke Metal Fabrication
New fence panels and posts were custom-made to match the existing design and meet the required structural design specifications.
Installation of Foundation Bases
Foundation bases were installed to provide stable support for the crowd control sliding gates and the fence.
Installation of Sliding Gates
Sliding gates were installed as part of the crowd control measures, allowing controlled access to the platform area. Installation of Metal Railing Fencing: The new metal railing fencing was installed to complete the anti-fatality fence system.
CHALLENGES
The project faced various challenges, which were effectively managed by the team:
Noise and Dust Control
To prevent noise pollution and dust dispersion to neighbouring areas, sound barriers and dust extraction measures were implemented. This was particularly important as some of the work had to be conducted during nonoperational hours and required possession or line blockage.
Impact on the Live Operational Railway
The project required pre-planned night and weekend possessions of the line to ensure the safety of workers and enable specific areas of fencing installation and material deliveries. This allowed the team to work without disrupting the regular railway operations.
Maintenance of Emergency Access Routes
Throughout the project, it was crucial to maintain safe and clear emergency access routes between Platform 2 and Platform 3. To achieve this, the installation process was carefully planned in stages, ensuring that the platforms remained accessible in case of any emergency. By addressing these challenges and implementing effective management strategies, the project was successfully completed, enhancing safety for passengers and preventing accidents on the platform.
